Ink Review: J. Herbin Eclat de Saphir and Rouge Bourgogne

So a little while ago, the Quo Vadis blog put out a call for reviewing some J.Herbin fountain pen inks. Thus, I have a review of Eclat de Saphir (a blue shade) and Rouge Bourgogne (a red shade).
(No, I’m not going to translate. Calling up my rusty high school French ain’t free, people)

Eclat de Saphir
I loved this ink from the minute I first tried it out. It flows well, rinses out of pens easily (which means less likelihood of staining), and behaves on various kinds of paper, including Clairefontaine, Crane, and copier paper. It’s not a waterproof ink. Pens filled with this ink included a Pelikan M415 Tortoise with fine-point nib, Sailor Sapporo with broad-point nib, and a Sailor Sapporo with a medium/fine nib.

Rouge Bourgogne
I’ve been on the fence about this ink. Like the Eclat de Saphir, it flows well, rinses well, and works with a variety of papers. But the color doesn’t grab me the way the Eclat de Saphir did. However, it has excellent shading properties. Of all the pens I’ve tried it in, a Sailor Professional Gear with a broad nib was my favorite combination. It also worked well in a Pelikan M620 Picadilly Circus with a medium nib.

  4. @inkophile: I still love the Eclat de Saphir but the Rouge Bourgogne has grown on me too, especially in a broader nib.
