I passed the four-week mark for my lens implants so I can stop all prescription eye drops, go swimming, etc. I celebrated by dying my hair dark brown. (I've always wanted jet-black hair but logic and my hairstylist are like, "no. Let it go, hon. Let it go").
The grooves behind my ears from wearing glasses since 1992 (and on a daily basis since 2004ish?). Those grooves are slowly fading. I still see an occasional "white line" in my field of vision, especially in bright lights. That's a side effect of the laser iridotomy that I needed before the Visian implant. It's normally a procedure for glaucoma patients-- the doctor uses a laser to punch a series of tiny holes in the eye's iris. This allows fluid in the eye to move easily and therefore, not build up to dangerous levels (because "high pressure build-up" is bad for glaucoma patients). I don't have glaucoma but I was going to stick an artificial lens behind my eye's natural lens so I also had to make sure that fluid didn't build up in my eye.
So when it comes to Visian ICL surgery, the suckiest part, by far, is the pre-op LPI. You're using a laser to punch multiple holes in your iris-- of course it's going to hurt. The actual Visian procedure was far less traumatizing (except for when the computer froze while trying to pull up my financial information). I felt some pressure after the doctor inserted the lenses and was manipulating them into place but then it was over. I could see. I had this weird gel all over my eyelids and crazy pre-op drops and I was hopped up on tranquilizers (standard stuff before eye surgeries, apparently), but I could see clearly, on my own.
I can still see. I wake up at 4 a.m. and still reach for my glasses before I realize that I don't need them. Occasionally, I think, "hmm, my eyes are tired. I guess I need to take my contact lenses out" and then I remember that I can't do that. I don't have to constantly dry my glasses when I'm out in the rain because I don't have them. I don't have to worry about getting crud on my contact lenses because they're not there. Oh, and apparently, the Visian implants have a UV blocker on them. Okay then. I don't get migraines from my glasses or contact lenses anymore.
I suppose there's a risk that five, 10, 15 years from now, I'll wind up with cataracts and/or glaucoma. Maybe my eyes will suddenly fall out one day. It will still have been worth it though.
Assuming I don't have to get the LPI again because: damn (warning: link to video of laser peripheral iridotomy on Youtube because there aren't enough terrifying things on the internet already).
